The Benefits Of Spring Cleaning
The dreaded spring clean! So dreaded it is often ignored, a task conveniently swept under the rug (pun absolutely intended).
What Is A Spring Clean?
Traditionally, Spring cleaning holds its roots in religious customs – some argue the Jewish Passover, others the Persian new year. Should you wish to procrastinate further from your cleaning chores, there is a wiki page describing these events in detail. The tradition persists today as a way to declutter and thoroughly clean those areas of our homes that have been ignored all year long. With this comes physical and psychological benefits, a lifting of the soul, cleaning the dirt away after a cold and dark winter, ready for the uplifting feeling of fresh fauna, lighter days and warmer sunshine. A spring clean can also be called a deep clean in the industry.
Spring cleaning in its most basic of forms is the cleaning of your entire home from top to bottom. Typically involving tasks like; dusting and cleaning ceiling fans, removing cobwebs from those hard-to-reach high ceilings, polishing sink taps, cleaning the grooves and sills of window frames, emptying and cleaning kitchen cupboards, etc. There are no strict rules as to how much you need to clean. Obviously, you can do as much, or as little, as you like in your own homes.
What benefits are there from spring cleaning?
There are several benefits from having a clean home, some physical and some psychological. Let’s have a quick look at some of the major benefits;
- Limits dust in the home – removing dust deposits from those hard-to-reach places improves the quality of air in your home. Access to dust in the air we breathe can lead to shortness of breath and other breathing difficulties. It can also lead to a boost in the immune system, helping us tackle the common cold and other unwanted viruses. I won’t go into what dust particles are made of, I will leave that horror story for you to research yourselves……if you’re brave enough!
- Helps lessen stress and depression – a tidy organised home and/or workspace can work wonders on our mental state. A nicely organised bookshelf, clean and organised kitchen cupboards, a tidy coffee table in the lounge, all these things can help relax our mind and aid in removing stress. Let’s face it, the mind loves organisation, even at a subconscious level. Returning home after a hard day’s work, or enjoying your retirement, one needs a place to recharge and relax. If that area is clean and organised the speed at which you can turn off and enjoy your time is increased exponentially.
- Can remove potential hazards in your home – this one doesn’t need much explaining. Tidying up the pile of shoes in the hallway, stacking the firewood properly, removing dust and debris off the floor, and putting sharp objects away neatly. All these things can limit unnecessary accidents in the home. Remember that part of a spring clean is organising, it’s not all about cleaning.
- Helps deter bugs and rodents – several unwanted pests, most notably rats and cockroaches, are attracted to an unclean environment. Cockroaches love bits of food, pet food bowls that aren’t clean, crumbs around the kitchen floor and worksurfaces, crumbs in and under the sofa etc. Rats are attracted to the same things, but mostly on a larger scale like waste bins, and dirty barbecues. A deep clean of food preparation areas and areas frequented by pets can drastically limit the probability of attracting unwanted pests.
