Summer Fun, Javea 2023

Summer Fun, Javea 2023

Javea is a fabulous place to find yourself during the summer months. It boasts miles of beautiful coastline, various beaches, and that all-important summer breeze. However, Javea is also very proud of its cultural heritage and has so much more to offer. From music to marauding Moors, from fiestas to family fun, here are the VillaMia top things to do this year.

Fiesta Fiesta!

Spain loves a fiesta! They’re fun and noisy, and people love to get involved. Here are our favourites for this summer:

Festival of San Juan

This fabulous fiesta, organised over several days, is a midsummer celebration. It’s a heady mix of the pious and the heathen. The San Juan fiesta comes to a head on the 23rd of June with the Nit Del Focs, when you’re invited to wear flowers in your hair and jump over bonfires. Once the bonfires are reduced to smouldering embers, the night continues with Correfocs – running with the fires. You will be negotiating the streets of Javea’s Old Town, trying to avoid fireworks, firecrackers & stray sparks, so wear something old & take a hat. Once experienced, never forgotten!

Moors & Christians

Colourful & dramatic, Javea’s Moors & Christians July parade re-enacts the ‘Reconquista’ – the 15th-century battle that freed Christian forces from their Islamic oppressors. The costumes are breathtaking, and the battle has more than a bit of pantomime about it. In Javea Port, many people book tables in local restaurants to enjoy both the parade & battle over the evening. It’s great fun for the kids.

Javea International Festival

Although not strictly a fiesta, The Javea International Festival is always a party. This festival – often dubbed The Food Festival – features dozens of countries showcasing their traditions, customs and food. Live music and lots of dancing make for a really fun experience.

Love Music? So does Javea!

Montgo Rock

Javea’s very own rock festival is held over a two-day summer weekend – this year in June. With the site adjacent to the Canal de La Fontana, revellers will find themselves only a street away from Javea’s La Grava beach and a short walk to The Arenal. Featuring the best in local rock & indie bands, this event is always quickly sold out – so be quick!

Xabia International Jazz Festival

Javea has a long tradition of hosting Jazz artists & events throughout the year, with the Xabia International Jazz Festival positioning itself as one of the primary destinations for Jazz in the area. Taking place the 1st week of August at the Plaza de la Constitution, this event is free to attend and features international acts and local artists. Guaranteed to get you dancing.

Taking it down a notch – Drift around Javea’s Coastline

Javea has brilliant beaches & beautiful clear water, but have you ever considered exploring the coast from the sea? You will find 25km of shore comprising beaches, coves and underwater caves. Used extensively by pirates & smugglers in years past, this breathtaking coast is now the go-to destination for snorkelers & scuba divers from Javea & beyond. Access these hidden gems via paddleboard or kayak, or, for the less adventurous, hire a boat and let the skipper take you in. Pack a picnic, stash your snorkel, and it’s the perfect day out.

Feeling Outdoorsy?

You couldn’t be in a better place! Javea has a fabulous microclimate and boasts an average of 320 sunny days a year. Add to this our beautiful natural surroundings, and Javea has a lot to offer all year round: cycling, hiking, climbing and, for those less active, check out Javea’s fourteen Miradors. These viewpoints have been specifically chosen to give some of the most beautiful views over this special town, with many being accessible via car.

A little local history

Javea is full of history & culture, and an excellent way to access this is via the Guided Tours offered by Javea’s Tourist Office. Recent tours have included: The History of Javea Port (including the reason the original fisherman’s cottages were built facing away from the sea), A Gastronomic Tour of Javea (how food helped this town transition from Neolithic to Tourism), and the Sorolla tours (showcasing the love of this famous painter for Javea). You can book current tours via Javea Tourist Office.

Just want to relax?

Nothing stops you from enjoying a few hours by the pool or a leisurely lunch in the garden. Take Javea at your own pace. There is something new to discover every day and every reason to come back & see more.
