Spanish Electrical Installation: What You Need to Know Before a Home Reform

If you own a property on the Costa Blanca and are planning a renovation, it is important to understand how a Spanish electrical installation differs from the systems you may be familiar with in the UK.

Spanish properties generally use a different approach to routing electrical cables. Wiring is commonly installed in conduits that are embedded within the walls and structure of the property.

This differs from the cable-routing methods often found in UK properties, where wiring may run through floor voids, roof spaces and other accessible areas.

How Does a Spanish Electrical Installation Work?

If you could see an X-ray of a typical Spanish property, you would see electrical conduits running through the walls between junction boxes. From these routes, cables drop down to switches, sockets and other electrical points before connecting back to the main electrical panel or consumer unit.

Every property is different. The electrical layout depends on the size and design of the property, as well as the location of major electrical loads such as kitchens, air conditioning systems, electric water heaters and other appliances.

When we plan a new electrical installation in Spain or work on a reform, we calculate the number, size and routing of the cables required.

You can think of the system as being similar to a giant wiring loom in a car. Each route has a specific purpose and needs to accommodate the cables required for that particular circuit.

Why Are Electrical Conduits Important?

When planning an electrical installation, we need to consider the size and number of cables that will run through each conduit.

Main routes may require larger conduits, while smaller routes can accommodate fewer cables. We also need to allow sufficient space within the conduit to help prevent excessive heat build-up and to allow future work where appropriate.

This planning becomes particularly important during a property reform.

Planning a Home Reform? Get the Electrics Checked First

If you are planning a reform, it may be tempting to concentrate only on the visible work.

You might be renovating a bathroom or kitchen. Perhaps you are plastering one room or the entire property. You may even be converting a small bedroom into an office.

Whatever the project, getting the electrical installation checked before work begins can be extremely worthwhile.

You may assume that you are simply replacing everything like-for-like. However, a reform provides an excellent opportunity to inspect the existing electrical infrastructure and identify possible improvements.

For example, an electrician may identify an opportunity to upgrade or add conduits along important routes between junction boxes.

Once the walls have been tiled or plastered, making these changes becomes much more difficult.

Why Should You Upgrade Electrical Conduits During a Reform?

Imagine that an important electrical route passes through a small bedroom that you are converting into an office.

If the walls are already open, it may be relatively straightforward to add another conduit or improve the existing installation.

Once the room has been plastered, painted and decorated, accessing those routes can mean opening the walls again.

This is why we recommend checking the electrical installation before the finishing work begins.

A relatively small amount of planning during a reform could make future electrical work considerably easier.

Older Spanish Properties and Electrical Installations

The age of the property can also make a significant difference.

Many older properties were designed around the electrical requirements of their time. Modern homes use far more electrical equipment than they did several decades ago.

Air conditioning, electric water heaters, induction hobs, ovens, washing machines, dishwashers, home offices and other equipment can all place additional demands on an electrical installation.

Older properties may therefore have fewer circuits and less conduit capacity than a modern installation requires.

When a property needs rewiring or electrical upgrades, existing conduits can make the work much easier. If suitable additional conduits are already in place, electricians may be able to use these routes rather than opening up finished walls.

Save Time and Avoid Unnecessary Damage

One of the biggest problems we encounter is arriving at a property after the walls have already been freshly plastered and painted.

The property may look fantastic, but the electrical installation has not been checked.

Sometimes we then have to explain that certain electrical improvements would require access through walls that have just been finished.

Nobody wants to hear that after spending time and money creating a beautifully finished home.

Checking the electrics before plastering or tiling can help avoid this situation.

When Should You Get Your Electrical Installation Checked?

You should consider having your electrical installation checked before:

  • Renovating a kitchen
  • Renovating a bathroom
  • Plastering or replastering walls
  • Converting a room into an office
  • Adding new electrical appliances
  • Installing additional air conditioning
  • Carrying out major building work
  • Planning a partial or complete rewire
  • Buying an older property that needs renovation

It is much easier to make improvements while walls are open than after they have been tiled, plastered and painted.

Use an Electrician Who Understands Spanish Installation Methods

If you are renovating a property on the Costa Blanca, it is important to work with an electrician who understands Spanish electrical installation methods and regulations.

The existing installation may differ considerably from what you are used to seeing in the UK. Understanding how the conduits, circuits and electrical points work together is essential when planning upgrades or alterations.

A professional assessment before your reform begins can help identify potential problems and opportunities for improvement.

It can also help you avoid unnecessary damage to newly finished walls.

Planning a Reform? Get Your Electrics Checked First

If you are planning any type of reform or simply want to improve old, uneven walls before decorating, consider having the electrical installation checked before the work begins.

Whether you are renovating one room or an entire property, a little planning at the start can save considerable time, disruption and expense later.

You know it makes sense!
